ANC and Opposition Party Report to Clamp Down on EFF Parliamentary Disruptions

Still an Inconvenient YouthThe ANC and opposition parties are to release a report on parliamentary conduct that could see the end of the Julius Malema-led Economic Freedom Fighters disrupting the House.

The EFF has brought Parliament to a standstill three times, demanding that President Jacob Zuma “pay back the money” on nonsecurity upgrades to his private home in Nkandla.

But EFF spokesman Mbuyiseni Ndlozi tells Business Day that the members of the subcommittee responsible for the report aim “not at protecting Parliament from disruptions, but at keeping the EFF out of the House”.

“If your view is to restore order, you merely send them to a disciplinary hearing. All presiding officers are ANC people who sit at meetings,” Ndlozi said.

THE days of chaotic scenes unfolding in Parliament could soon be over as the African National Congress (ANC) and opposition parties are putting the final touches to a subcommittee on a rules report that will be released to the National Assembly on Tuesday.

The expectation is that the recommendations contained in the report will put an end to recent theatrics in the House that have seen sessions abandoned — most notably President Jacob Zuma’s question and answer sitting this month — and define what constitutes good parliamentary conduct.
