Podcast: Mandy Wiener Discusses My Second Initiation with John Maytham
Journalist Mandy Wiener spoke to John Maytham on 567 Cape Talk about how she had approached Vusi Pikoli several times to tell his story after he was removed from his post as Director of Public Prosecutions, but he was reluctant to talk about it. However, a few months later she called him for a comment on a separate issue and she could sense something had shifted: “I think the time is right, I feel like I’m ready now to tell my story,” Pikoli told her.
Wiener says it took many discussions before they settled on the format of My Second Initiation and she mentions that there is an author’s note at the beginning of the book which explains that this is not an objective, journalistic account but rather Pikoli’s story. She says that Pikoli has lived an intriguing life, from growing up in Port Elizabeth to his time in exile, and that the book looks at this as well as his time in public prosecutions:
