Video: Swati Dlamini and Sahm Venter Discuss Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s 491 Days
Sahm Venter of the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory and Swati Dlamini, Nelson Mandela and Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s granddaughter, were interviewed on eNCA by Joanne Joseph about Madikizela-Mandela’s 491 Days: Prisoner Number 1323/69, which they edited.
Venter explained that it was David Soggot, Madikizela-Mandela’s advocate, who encouraged her to write a journal while she was in prison, and his wife Greta Soggot who found and returned the journal to her forty-one years after she was released. She said that Madikizela-Mandela titled her journal “The Saga”. Dlamini described how Madikizela-Mandela took the diary straight to the Centre of Memory and then told her that she would like her to go through it and turn it into a book if she felt that was the right thing to do.
