Eusebius McKaiser Unpacks Blade Nzimande’s Contradictory Statements About the Media
In The New Age, Eusebius McKaiser, author of A Bantu in My Bathroom, discusses Blade Nzimande’s recent statements about South African print media constituting a “huge liberal offensive” against “our democracy”. McKaiser takes apart the minister’s statements and, while finding them to be both to have the sting of truth and concurrent with a popularly held view within the ANC, he also finds them at odds with what democracy in South Africa looks like on paper:
Higher education minister Blade Nzimande reportedly said last week that the print media constitutes a “huge liberal offensive” against “our democracy”. He suggested instead a “revolutionary” defence of the constitution. Yet again an interlocutor in the current debate on the media is here simultaneously making a sensible and a daft point. So it is worth separating the good from the bad.
