1. Why did you decide you wanted to write WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU WANT TO GIVE UP?

Or: Tell us about the point when you wanted to give up that inspired you to write this book?

Like all entrepreneurs I have been in a very dark place many a time. One of the worst of those times was in my late 20’s when I was running a small business with 40 staff. It was the 20th of the month and I did not know how I was going to pay salaries, never mind the rent. All my investors refused to lend more money, the overdraft was at the limit and there was little chance of me collecting enough money from debtors to get through this month end.

By chance, or divine intervention, I received a call from a family friend called Stan. He invited me to lunch and we chatted about the business. He probed me with question after question and become visibly more and more excited about my business. He thought I had built a great business concept and that cashflow was the problem, not the long term viability of the business. He enthused me so much that I went back to the office to find alternative investors. Before lunch I was on the brink of giving up, after lunch I was excited about the business. All it took was another’s point of view to turn things around.
