Podcast: Allister Sparks Explains “What Went Wrong” with the ANC and the Secrecy Bill
Jenny Crwys-Williams spoke to Allister Sparks, journalist and co-author of Tutu: The Authorised Portrait, about the passing of the Protection of State Information Bill last Tuesday. Sparks said he was completely surprised to see the ANC “move in this direction”. He remarked how we were once so pleased to see the ANC in power, but now we feel “betrayed”.
When asked “what went wrong?”, Sparks explained that power and corruption are the two culprits. “Power has corrupted the ANC. It’s rotten through and through. It’s not the media that is the issue, it’s the public. They’re trying to conceal information from the public”. Sparks said the bill also comes at a moment when there is renewed interest in the arms deal investigation.
