Ariel Dorfman

Heading South, Looking NorthPicador Africa has announced that they have acquired the southern African rights to publish two titles by Chilean author and playwright, Ariel Dorfman. In October this year, Picador Africa will release a new edition of Dorfman’s acclaimed memoir, Heading South, Looking North, as well as a new collection of writings, Writing the Deep South: The Mandela Lecture and Other Mirrors for South Africa.

Last year, Dorfman delivered the annual Nelson Mandela Memorial lecture as a guest of the Nelson Mandela Foundation. He describes his imminent publication in southern Africa as “a dream come true”:

Press release:

Picador Africa is delighted to announce that we have acquired the Southern African rights to publish a new title by Ariel Dorfman, the internationally acclaimed Chilean author, playwright and human rights activist who was a guest of the Mandela Foundation in South Africa in 2010.

“It’s a dream come true to be published in South Africa. I have selected texts that I feel will particularly  buzz and abide in the ears and minds and hearts of South African readers. There is my Mandela Lecture itself and some other meditations on South Africa over the years, but also more general reflections on terror and peace, on bilingualism and globalisation, on compassion and war, on torture and fear and dignity in the aftermath of 9/11, on the necessity and insufficiency of Truth Commissions, on civilisation and barbarism, on Latin Americans like Che Guevara or García Márquez who have exceptional messages for South Africans, and even more recent pieces on Chile, its earthquakes and its miners rescued from the depths of darkness and despair.” – ARIEL DORFMAN

Not only will we be publishing Dorfman’s inspiring new collection Writing the Deep South: The Mandela Lecture and Other Mirrors for South Africa, in October 2011, but we will also be re-issuing his highly acclaimed autobiography Heading South, Looking North.

Hailed by Salman Rushdie as ‘one of the most important voices coming out of Latin  America’, Ariel Dorfman’s many internationally acclaimed works of poetry, fiction, and non-fiction include this memoir, Heading South, Looking North, first published in 1998. It was the basis for the documentary film A Promise to the Dead, directed by Peter Raymont and nominated for Oscars in 2008. His most famous play, Death and the Maiden, has been staged in over 100 countries.
