A fresh article by Caroline Henshaw in The Wall Street Journal quotes Jay Naidoo, author of Fighting for Justice and chairman of the Development Bank of Southern Africa, on the intersection between the global food market and the world of finance and how, with markets driven by money, and with food prices at an all time high, the number of the world’s chronically malnourished people will soon reach into the billions:

Right now world food markets are a game of two halves.

On the one hand food prices have surged to record highs this year, pushing an estimated 44 million people into poverty, according to the World Bank.

Charities warn the number of chronically malnourished people worldwide may soon top one billion as happened in the wake of the last food crisis and a pick-up of grain markets so far this month warns of more price rises to come.
