Chris van Wyk’s Open Letter to Kuli Roberts
To say that Chris van Wyk was unimpressed with Kuli Roberts’ supposedly-satirical column, for the Sowetan Sunday World, on Coloured women – the article sparked a furore in South Africa and has since been withdrawn – would be to make the understatement of the week.
Here’s a furious van Wyk giving Roberts a piece of his mind:
Dear Poppetjie
I AM what you would call a coloured. I am married to a coloured woman and we have two coloured sons. My wife, Kathy, and I are proud of who we are: vehemently anti-racist and antisexist South Africans. We fought for freedom in the United Democratic Front in the ’80s and we continue to work towards a united country.
In keeping with this mission, I visit dozens of schools every year (for mahala) talking to South African kids (of whom the vast majority are black) about the immense value of reading.
I take issue with racism wherever and whenever I see or hear it because I believe it is evil and, if left unchecked, could destroy our country. How do I know this? There was a form of racism called apartheid not so long ago which kept us apart from each other and almost destroyed us all.
