On the Other Side of Shame Launched in Joburg

Lynette LangmanJoanne Jowell & Lynette Langman“If you consider the boundless scope in the Jewish community for bearing grudges that last for centuries, then you will see how astounding Lynette Langman’s story of the journey from shame to joy really is,” said Joanne Jowell, author of On the Other Side of Shame, at her Johannesburg launch.

A capacity crowd filled Exclusive Books in Killarney Mall to hear how the 17-year-old Lynette was forced to give up her baby son for adoption over 40 years ago – and how the secret unravelled with the best possible outcome.

Max & Lynette Langman When her son, Anthony Egnal, then living in Seattle and unaware of his parentage, began his own process of adopting a child, he knew he wanted to make contact with his birth mother, to tell her how grateful he was for the gift of life. Lynette’s dark secret came to light in 2000, paving the way for her to abandon a life of guilt.

Colin Langman, the eldest of the three children born to Max and Lynette after their marriage, asked Max and Lynette – who were present – why they’d never spoken of his brother. “We didn’t know where he was. We didn’t know if he was alive. And we didn’t want to burden you with the pain we carried,” said his mother.

Colin LangmanHe remembered the emotional first telephone conversation with Anthony, the brother he’d gained, as “the best 40 minutes of my life. The phone rang and my wife answered, saying, ‘Your brother’s on the phone.’ I said, ‘Howzit Boet?’ It was nothing short of wonderful.”

Colin paid the family’s respects to the late Joe and Selma Egnal, who raised their brother with traditional family values. “I’m proud of my mother who bared her soul after keeping a secret for 40 years.”

Joanne Jowell & Colin LangmanLynette Langman said that she never imagined that this story would touch so many lives. She thanked the author “for birthing the story, between giving birth to her own two sons!” The journey of disclosure was terrifying, “but my fears were unfounded. My pain has been transformed to joy and gratitude.”
